Komatsu Ltd. was established from Komatsu Iron Works Ltd. (est. 1917) which manufactured mining machines, developed by Meitaro Takeuchi, founder of Komatsu Ltd., for use in the Yusenji copper mine. Based on a firm belief of developing the machinery industry in the rural areas and promoting the growth of industries, as well as a high aspiration of high quality transcending national boundaries, Meitaro Takeuchi began manufacturing at Komatsu Ltd. with an eye to international markets, even when he founded Komatsu. The next year, Komatsu absorbed Komatsu Electric Steel Mills, building the foundation for integrated production from steel castings to machining and assembly, which have resulted in one of Komatsu’s strengths today.

1938 Opened the Awazu Plant
as the base
to expand the production of tractors.
Komatsu opened the Awazu Plant in Komatsu City as the production base for farm tractors, demand for which was expected to expand substantially for the development of Manchukuo and in line with the government’s food security policies. The site was near today’s JR Awazu Station on the Hokuriku Line and provided good conditions for the construction of the plant, including an abundance of underground water and reasonable land price. This newly opened plant was pressed into the production of munitions due to the expansion of the Sino-Japanese War, deviating from the initial plan.

1952 Opened the Osaka Plant:
move to the Pacific Ocean side.
The Osaka Plant in Hirakata City was opened on the former site of an arsenal, which was disposed of by the government, and was used as a base to produce artillery shells. The Osaka Plant became not only a base to expand the business to the Pacific Ocean side of the country, but it also helped Komatsu to survive the recession following soon after the outbreak of the Korean War by responding to the extraordinary demand for artillery shells.

The Ikegai Automobile Manufacturing Company and Chuetsu Electro Chemical Co., Ltd. were acquired to expand business and began operation at the Kawasaki Plant and the Himi Plant, respectively. Initially, the Kawasaki Plant mainly focused on the repair of heavy-duty vehicles owned by the U.S. forces and the Himi Plant, on the production of high-quality iron castings. By inheriting the technologies and facilities of the former two companies, Komatsu expanded its manufacturing operations and production items.

Challenge for global quality
1961 Project “A”
to meet the
industry giant’s market entry.
In the 1960s, in the internationalization of Japan’s economy, the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer, decided to enter the Japanese market. In order to fight against this strong rival, Komatsu implemented the Project “A” quality improvement project with a company-wide commitment to improving everything, including a single screw, and developed a high-quality vehicle for mass production within about only two years. In the process, Komatsu introduced a quality control (QC) method ahead of competitors. The idea of incorporating QC in the manufacturing process has been passed down over the generations to today in the company.

1962 Opened the Oyama Plant as the base
Komatsu purchased land and built a new plant in Oyama City, and transferred the production of iron cast parts of Cummins engines from the Kawasaki Plant. It developed careful facility plans by incorporating the results of study visits to overseas plants, and introduced the then latest equipment and production technologies to the plant. Subsequently in 1969, the engine production departments were consolidated at the Oyama Plant.

In recognition of its quality improvement measures in Project “A”, Komatsu became the first construction equipment manufacturer to win the Deming Application Prize (presently the Deming Prize), one of the highest-ranking awards for quality control. Since winning the Award, Komatsu has continued to enhance its quality management system and raise employees’ quality awareness to make further progress.

In the 60th anniversary year, Komatsu received the Japan Quality Control Prize, as a result of the concerted effort made by all the employees, and became the sixth company to receive the honor since the award was established in 1969. Since winning the Deming Prize in 1964, Komatsu had continued a ceaseless effort to improve quality, and conducted TQC activities not only internally, but also at its suppliers and overseas plants. Komatsu recieved the award in recognition of its growth under this “all-Komatsu” system.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Komatsu, the Komatsu Women’s Judo Team was established. The members of the team are full-time employees of our company and are provided with an environment in which they can concentrate on judo, including the construction of their own dojo (training gym) in 1993. The Team has produced many of the world’s top-class judo athletes, including Olympic medalists. In the All- Japan Businessmen’s Team Judo Championships, the Team has continued to renew record highs in the number of victories in the women’s division.

Komatsu established Komatsu Industries Corp. with main offering of medium-sized and small Servo press machines by spinning off the sheet-metal and press machine business in 1994. Komatsu expanded the industrial machinery business by developing new large Servo presses in 2005. Komatsu Industries Corp. relocated its head office to the new Kanazawa Plant in 2007. Komatsu transferred the large press business to Komatsu Industries Corp. in 2010. By adding laser cutting machines and welding robots to its offering, Komatsu Industries Corp. is working to expand the industrial machinery business.

In 1980, Komatsu advanced research and development of laser technologies for the main objective of commercializing its engine combustion diagnosis system, and in 1984 commercialized the KLE-630, Japan’s first excimer laser unit. Since then, it built a solid business base for its excimer lasers for lithography tools in semiconductor manufacturing and expanded the business. In 2000, Komatsu established Gigaphoton Inc. and it is further promoting research and development of light sources for semiconductor lithography systems, including the market introduction of the injection-lock ArF excimer laser unit. In 2010, the number of excimer laser units delivered to customers surpassed 1,000, establishing the company as the top brand manufacturer of excimer laser units today.

With the international conditions and market environment changing at a higher speed, Komatsu thought it essential for all its employees to share its values across the world and therefore developed The KOMATSU Way in writing to ensure further growth as a global company. The KOMATSU Way spells out the mindset and action guidelines, and Komatsu’s DNA, which had been built up by forerunners by overcoming hardships, and must be passed on to next generations. There are two versions: one for the entire company and the other for each department, and both have been revised repeatedly. Moreover, the translated versions (in 13 languages) of the former are distributed to Komatsu’s plants across the world.

2007 Built Ibaraki and Kanazawa
In response to expanding demand, Komatsu constructed the Ibaraki Plant to produce large dump trucks and wheel loaders for use in construction and mining. It also built the Kanazawa Plant to produce large press machines for use by automakers as well as PC4000 super-large hydraulic excavators. Both plants are located adjacent to harbors, helping reduce land transportation costs and CO2 emissions substantially.

2008 Renamed as Komatsu NTC Ltd.
In 2008, Komatsu made Nippei Toyama a wholly owned subsidiary and renamed it Komatsu NTC Ltd. Komatsu NTC’s main products are transfer machines for use in machining automobile engines and transmissions as well as wire saws for use in manufacturing solar panels and semiconductors. In 2011, the company merged with Komatsu Machinery Corporation. Supplies flagship crankshaft millers, mainly to Japanese automakers as a full-line machine tool manufacturer today.

2008 Renamed as KELK Ltd.
Komatsu established Japan Solidate Co., Ltd. in 1966, based on its research in thermoelectric semiconductors. Japan Solidate expanded its business from temperature control equipment to electric products and electronic controls, and renamed it Komatsu Electronics, Inc. in 1972. While specializing in the temperature control equipment business, Komatsu Electronics expanded business mainly by developing the ultrapure water heating equipment, which has remained a flagship product of the company today. In the wake of the IT era, has expanded business with semiconductor manufacturing-related equipment and micro-modules for optical communication. Renamed KELK Ltd. in 2008 and it continues to today.

Komatsu opened Komatsu-no-mori on the premises of the former Komatsu Plant as part of its 90th anniversary project. Built under the concept of “forwarding people and technology for the future”, Komatsu-no-mori accommodates the KOMATSU Way Global Institute, which is responsible for global-scale human resource development of Komatsu Group employees. In an area open to the public, the Waku-Waku Komatsu Pavilion, was built in the architectural design of the old head office of Komatsu. There are also Genki Satoyama, which recreates an undeveloped woodland of the Kaga region, and the Komatsu 930E dump truck, the world’s largest class truck, which used to work in a copper mine in Chile.

Komatsu established Komatsu Customer Support Japan Ltd. to ensure sustainable growth in Japan’s maturing markets of construction and forklifts by merging Komatsu Construction Equipment Sales and Service Ltd., Komatsu Renal Ltd., and Komatsu Forklift Co., Ltd. By integrating the strengths of the three companies, the new company has been doing business to further improve customer satisfaction.

1955 Motor graders to go overseas: First export contract.
In response to the request for the supply of 30 units of the GD37 motor grader from the Entre Rios provincial government in Argentina, Komatsu concluded its first export agreement. At that time, exporting construction equipment was a “dream” for Japanese manufacturers, who were far behind their counterparts in Western countries, in terms of technologies. Thinking that entering the overseas market was essential for its future growth, Komatsu decided to go global, achieving one of its founding principles.

In 1964, starting with a large order for bulldozers from Italy, Komatsu expanded exports to Europe. Accordingly, it became urgently necessary to establish local operations for prompt after-sale service, and established N.V. Komatsu Europe S.A in Antwerp, Belgium. Following this first overseas subsidiary, Komatsu proactively increased its bases across the world. It relocated N.V. Komatsu Europe to Brussels in 1969 and reinforced its operations as Komatsu’s sales and service base for Europe.

After establishing Komatsu do Brasil Ltda. in 1970, Komatsu founded a joint venture in the country in 1973 for the local production of bulldozers. The following year, it opened a plant in Suzano and sequentially employed of Brazilian workers. It subsequently completed the D50A as its first bulldozer manufactured outside Japan, which was followed by the production of the D60/65A, and also the D30E for the agricultural market. The use of locally produced components raised the manufacturing cost. As a result, the sales prices were higher than those of imports, but orders for the products flowed in steadily, as the use of low-interest loans was approved for them.

Against the background of Indonesia’s industrialization, Komatsu established PT Komatsu Indonesia (KI) in 1982, embarked on the production of bulldozers first in 1983, and then expanded steadily to hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, and motor graders. In 1997, KI started production of dump trucks. Later, Komatsu expanded Reman functions in Indonesia, positioning Indonesia as one of its global Reman centers. In 2005, Komatsu established PT Komatsu Marketing and Support Indonesia to expand sales of spare parts and engage in product support. Then in 2016, Komatsu established the Asia Development Center, steadily reinforcing operations in Indonesia.

To start production in the United States, Komatsu established Komatsu America Manufacturing Corp. (currently, Komatsu America Corp.’s Chattanooga Manufacturing Operations). We also founded America Industries LLC in Chicago to sell industrial machinery and provide related services in the same year, thereby improving its local production and sales operations in the country.

To launch production in the United Kingdom, Komatsu UK Ltd. was established. A plant was also purchased from the local authority in Birtley, Tyne and Wear, North England in 1985 and production of hydraulic excavators and wheel loaders began in 1986.

To launch full-line construction equipment businessin in the Americas, Komatsu founded Komatsu Dresser Company as a joint venture with Dresser Industries, Inc. Headquartered in Libertyville, Illinois, this joint venture targeted North America, Central and South America (excluding Mexico and Cuba) as its business territory and launched the sale of construction equipment under the two brands of Komatsu and Dresser and through two channels to over 200 distributors.

For efficient business operation in Europe, Komatsu Europe International N.V. was established in Belgium as the regional headquarters to execute a range of decision-making functions for Europe. By inviting the local human resource office to participate in management for the growth of the company in local communities, and also by strengthening ties with the head office in Tokyo, a global business system was built to make flexible responses, even to political and economic changes.

To further promote the sales of construction equipment in the eastern part of Australia, NS Komatsu Pty. Ltd. was established as a joint venture. In this region, while Komatsu’s official distributor had been selling Komatsu products, Komatsu decided to participave directly in retail sales with the establishment of the new company.

Komatsu Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. was established within the Oyama Plant as a joint venture to produce small Cummins engines and Cummins Komatsu Engine Company was also established within the Cummins’ Seymour Plant in the U.S. to produce large Komatsu engines. In preparation for the stricter gas exhaust regulations in and after 1996, Komatsu aimed to develop next-generation high-quality engines by combining the technologies of the two companies. Also, it expanded its global development, production and sales system and enhanced its ability to deal with foreign exchange fluctuations through mutual supplement with Cummins.

"Komatsu Changlin Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., currently known as Komatsu (Changzhou) Construction Machinery Corp.", a joint venture, was established to manufacture and sell wheel loaders in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. Komatsu had been exporting construction equipment to China since the 1950s and also had licensed bulldozer-, wheel loader- and hydraulic excavator-related technologies in response to the requests of the Chinese government, thereby supporting the government’s plan to foster domestic production.

Komatsu Shantui Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. was established as a joint venture to manufacture and sell hydraulic excavators in Jining, Shandong Province, China and Komatsu Changlin Foundry Corporation, currently known as Komatsu (Changzhou) Foundry Corporation, was established as a joint venture to manufacture and sell castings in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. The establishment of these companies enabled the procurement of high-quality castings in addition to the production of construction equipment, further fostering the building of its global production network.

Demag Komatsu GmbH, a joint venture with German Mannesmann-Demag, was established to develop, produce and sell super-large hydraulic excavators for use in mines. Komatsu had released super-large bulldozers and super-large dump trucks for use in mines but did not have hydraulic excavators in the product lineup. By adding the products made by Demag with its proven records, Komatsu became able to provide a package of products to the mining market, which contributed to the progress of its mining equipment business.

Komatsu acquired equity shares of Modular Mining Systems, Inc. (MMS) of the United States and expanded its mining equipment business. MMS had a proven record with its DISPATCH system, which wirelessly collected information about the locations and operating status of vehicles within mines to manage the allocation of all the vehicles. This system enabled Komatsu to propose the systematization of on-site processes in mines, which in turn substantially contributed to boosting customers’ productivity and reducing their costs. The technology was also adopted for the AHS unmanned dump truck.

Komatsu Middle East FZE. was established as a local sales company in the United Arab Emirates to reinforce the construction equipment business in the Middle East. Komatsu (China) Ltd., established as the regional headquarters for the construction equipment business, enabled Komatsu to conduct business by integrating production, sales and service. Komatsu also established branch offices of the subsidiary and localized customer-specific services. It has also been exporting its products via this subsidiary to neighboring areas, such as Southeast Asian countries and Russia, serving as an important base for Komatsu’s global business.

As part of the strategy to expand sales of its utility equipment (compact machines) in North America, Komatsu built a plant in Newberry, South Carolina in the United States. Initially, this plant produced backhoe loaders to meet strong demand y at that time, and now it produces wheel loaders and forklifts.

To enter the expanding mining market in India on a full scale, Komatsu India Pvt. Ltd. was established and began producing dump trucks at the plant constructed in Chennai. The Plant began manufacturing hydraulic excavators in 2014.

In 2006, Komatsu established Komatsu CIS, LLC as the regional headquarters, strengthening its sales and service operations in CIS. To prepare for production in CIS where markets were becoming commercialized, Komatsu established Komatsu Manufacturing Rus, LLC in Yaroslavl in 2008. In 2010, Komatsu opened its first manufacturing plant in Russia and began production of hydraulic excavators. The plant also began production of dump trucks in 2011.

Joy Global Inc., a U.S. mining machinery manufacturer, was acquired to expand Komatsu’s mining equipment business and was renamed “Komatsu Mining Corp.,” and began full-line offerings of mining equipment and services. After adding to the product lineup, the rope shovels and super-large wheel loaders, that match Komatsu’s super-large dump trucks, as well as super-large draglines, synergy effects have been generated also for the sales and service system.

Press machines have the longest history among Komatsu’s major product items. These machines were developed by using the technologies accumulated by Komatsu Iron Works, the predecessor of today’s Komatsu Ltd., through the operation of the Yusenji copper mine, namely the basic technology for manufacturing hydraulic equipment and steel casting technology. As one of the few integrated manufacturers of press machines at that time, Komatsu proactively developed and produced a range of press machines, including the hydraulic casting press, crank press and friction press machines.

In response to a request from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Komatsu took on the challenge of developing a farm tractor in Japan. While competitors gave up this challenge at the prototyping stage, Komatsu continued its effort with a strong commitment to developing a unique product that others could not imitate, and finally completed Japan’s first tractor. Subsequently in 1932, Komatsu released the “G25 tractor” equipped with its own newly developed engine as an improved version of the product.

Ordered by the Japanese navy, Komatsu began the development of bulldozers in December 1942, which were to be used for the construction of air force bases. By mounting the hydraulic earthwork equipment on the G40 tractor, they completed the G40 bulldozer (Komatsu Model 1 land leveling machine), which became the first bulldozer made in Japan. The Company subsequently made a range of prototypes to manufacture bulldozers and built its foundation as a manufacturer of construction equipment.

After the World War Ⅱ, operations were resumed on a full scale by starting with the production of farm tractors, and the first model of the D50 bulldozer was completed to make it a new flagship product. Expecting that demand for bulldozers would expand for the reconstruction of the country, Komatsu made multiple improvements to the D50. In 1949, the integrated production from engines to bodies of bulldozers at the Awazu Plant was resumed, and gradually the production capacity was increased.

Demand for 4WD wheel loaders with a shorter cycle time was expected to increase. In response, Komatsu formed a technological partnership with International Harvester, which was the world’s No. 1 company in the field at that time, and expanded the model range.

In its effort to diversify its product range, Komatsu had been producing mechanical excavators at its Osaka Plant since 1964. However, soon after the start of the production, demand for mechanical excavators was replaced with demand for hydraulic excavators. In response, it expanded the scope of its technological partnership with Bucyrus-Erie to start manufacturing hydraulic excavators. Starting with the 15H, it released a series of hydraulic excavators with improved specifications for use in Japan by incorporating its own technologies, and enhanced its development and production capabilities.

1988 Advanced microcomputer controls
Komatsu launched “Avance” series hydraulic excavators, top-grade models with microcomputer controls. The “Avance” series featured a microcomputer-controlled engine and hydraulic valve operations, achieving a high level of both power output and fuel economy. The series also featured improved operability. As a result, sales topped 10,000 units before one year of market introduction.

1992 From disposal to use
Komatsu developed the mobile debris crusher series as products designed to reduce environmental impact. The series offered the advantages of crushing concrete debris generated in the demolition of buildings, recycling them for use as roadbed materials and foundation materials of buildings, and being mobile. Having been mobile, they also contributed to reducing workers’ workload and the number of dump trucks needed to carry debris.

Komatsu Dresser Company (currently, Komatsu America Corp.) developed the 930E dump truck with 300-ton payload capacity, the world’s largest class. Mining companies with large mines needed dump trucks with a large payload capacity to improve productivity and reduce hauling costs. Komatsu Dresser improved the performance of large dump trucks by working with leading companies of vehicle bodies, components, etc.

Ahead of competitors across the world, Komatsu developed and shipped the “HCP3000” small servo press machine (80-ton press machine) driven by a full-fledged servomotor. With the slide, pressing speed, pressure and slide motion settable according to the processing details, this press machine contributed to the realization of users’ ideas through deformation (do you mean reformation?) processing. Subsequently, released the “H1F series” small servo press machine, the “H2F series” medium-sized servo press machine and also large servo press machines.

Komatsu developed the WA1200 super-large wheel loader, achieving high productivity, fuel economy, and comfortable operation, which are demanded by mining and quarrying customers around the world. It featured a large-capacity bucket, as well as the most powerful excavation and traction of its class. Its newly developed clutch system, in particular, improved operability, dynamically increasing work volume.

2001 KOMTRAX as standard feature:
Anticipating the coming age of IoT.
The Komatsu Machine Tracking System (KOMTRAX) allows for the remote checking of the location and operating conditions of Komatsu’s construction machines around the world via GPS and communication devices which are installed on the machines. The system is also useful for theft prevention and credit management. Starting with the PC200-7 in 2001, the system came with all models as standard. The data obtained from KOMTRAX is effectively used for the enhancement of customer service and for production planning.

For the removal of antipersonnel landmines buried across conflict areas in the world, Komatsu developed the D85MS-15 demining machine based on the D85 bulldozer. Equipped with protective armor, the demining machine crushes landmines buried up to 30 cm underground by using a special tool attached to the front part of the machine. Compared with manual removal, this machine has removed the mines 25 to 50 times faster. The first unit was shipped to Afghanistan, followed by other units to Cambodia and Angola, contributing to peace.

2008 Launched the world’s first*
hybrid hydraulic excavators.
The world’s first* hybrid hydraulic excavator, “PC200-8,” was launched and equipped with the in-house developed Komatsu Hybrid System, achieving dynamic fuel economy. In 2010, full-scale mass production of the HB series started and in 2011 an award (for technology) from the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers was received.

2008 Succeeded in the world’s first
Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)
Komatsu led the world by deploying the AHS at a copper mine in Chile. By equipping dump trucks with a high-precision GPS, an obstacle detection sensor, and a variety of controllers for the central management of their operation in the main control room, Komatsu achieved 24-hour unmanned operation of the dump trucks. The AHS contributes to substantially increasing on-site productivity and safety and solving the issue of the labor shortage.

2012 Launched high value-added forklifts.
In the forklift business, where a severe price competition had remained in Japan, Komatsu shifted its business model which differentiated itself from competitors by offering high value-added forklifts that featured the integrated technological expertise of Komatsu. It launched the “FH series” hydraulic forklifts in 2012, which incorporated technologies of construction equipment, and the “FE series” electric forklifts in 2014, which were equipped with Komatsu-original rapid recharging system.

2013 ICT-intensive bulldozers:
innovation at construction sites.
Komatsu achieved the world’s first commercial deployment* of the “D61PXi/EXi” intelligent machine control (iMC) bulldozer, which features automatic blade controls from excavation to the final levelling of land. It was developed by fusing Komatsu’s control technology with Topcon’s GNSS survey technology. The bulldozer frees its operators from complex blade manipulation, thereby reducing their work burden, enabling even inexperienced operators to work just like skilled operators, and contributing to solving the issue of operator shortage at construction sites.

2014 Achieved intelligent Machine Control
ICT hydraulic excavators.
Development of the PC200i/PC210LCi, the world’s first* hydraulic excavator equipped with the Machine Control system, boosted the automation of construction work. By collating the information about the location of the bucket blade obtained through the GNSS antenna and the base station with the design data, the system controls the operation of the work equipment. Starting in 2015, a mounted stereo camera on the machine enabled onboard surveying, which has led to the idea of “SMARTCONSTRUCTION.”

Creating a workplace of the future.
“SMARTCONSTRUCTION” is a solution service to create safe, highly productive, smart and clean construction sites of the future by connecting all kinds of data available at construction sites through the use of ICT. By fusing the 3D terrain data obtained by using drones with ICT construction equipment, Komatsu has increased the efficiency of the process from surveying to inspection and has also “visualized” the process, thereby contributing to the solution of problems at construction sites.

electric mini excavator in Japan
Komatsu launched the PC30E-5 electric mini excavator in Japan, an industry-pacesetting model, to promote the widespread use of construction equipment friendly to humans and the natural environment. Based on Komatsu’s accumulated technological expertise of hybrid construction equipment and electric forklift trucks, this electric model offers excavation performance on par with the internal combustion model of the same power output. While achieving zero exhaust gas and an outstanding noise reduction, it also promises extended use in indoor and night-time work.

Komatsu launched four new IoT devices and eight new applications within its existing SMARTCONSTRUCTION offerings. These will accelerate digital transformation efforts, including SMARTCONSTRUCTION Retrofit kit ICT capabilities, such as 3D machine guidance and payload measurement, to conventional construction equipment. It also began the formal introduction of SMARTCONSTRUCTION in the United States and Europe (Germany, United Kingdom, France, and Denmark). While the previous version of SMARTCONSTRUCTION digitized only part of the construction process (“vertical digitization”), these new IoT devices and applications will allow for the digitization of the entire process (“horizontal digitization”). This will enable worksite operations to be optimized by synchronizing the actual worksite with its digital twin, thereby achieving dynamic improvement in the safety, productivity, and environmental performance of the entire construction.
